Subject: Awright! X-Wing works pretty well!
To whomever suggested getting rid of Qemm Stealth while using X-Wing with
Megaem, a million thanks! Except for the odd high pitched (extremely
high!) whine, the game runs quite smoothly. Getting rid of the annoying pause
while re-targeting helped me complete a somewhat difficult mission (apparantly
I was "losing" the TIE fighters just long enough for them to destroy their
target!).
Now, does anyone know why this occasional high whine occurs? It occurs most
often when returning from a mission, as the spacecraft zooms back towards the
hangar. Also occurs when the shot of the (usually trashed) ship is displayed. I
also get some kind of static (actually, it kind of sounds like applause) just
before departing for a mission, when the ship is still in the hangar. This
static is sustained until the ship comes out of hyperspace.
Any further help much appreciated! Go Gravis!

Has anyone out there gotten the MIDI in Encore 3.0 to work with the GUS?
I've tried various ways to fix it, including setting up a new configuration file
for Encore, but it just doesn't seem to recognize it. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I had these same problems...the 'snow' seems to appear in quite a few games;
Jetfighter II does it, Lemmings does it, and probably a couple of others.
I'm not sure what causes it. Epic also hangs for me when exiting, and
nothing I've been able to do can stop it. Sometimes setting
VIDEO_8514A_XGA_IOTRAP to OFF can help graphics performance, but it didn't
cure those two problems for me...

Has anyone been able to get Rebel Assault to work with the GUS. It has GUS
listed, but I can't get through the open screen. Any suggestions would be

CDROM drive. I have tried it with EMM386 on and off with no change.

I found that the new Windows drivers doesn't work!!! I tried following the
instructions for installation, and all I got working was the digitized
sound part...couldn't get the MIDI part to work. It's a good thing I had
my Windows directory backup up...I just deleted the whole thing
and restored it to the old original drivers. Has anyone been able to
SUCCESSFULLY install the damn new drivers yet?

I doubt you have IRQ or DMA conflicts, since the IRQ that the GUS uses is set up
by ULTRINIT. Despite the fact that you have already tried this, I would
double-triple check the port address setting. Beyond that, maybe you have a
dead board?

With all these exciting, raving GUSsers out here, and with the new
releases of GUS games and MegaEM, the GUS is truly alive and kicking!
What we need now is a list similar to the list of games that work with AIL,
but this time with MegaEM/SBDAC. Can somebody compile such a list,
with pointers on how to get certain games working and how MegaEM
perform in these games.
This list should then be added to the GUS FAQ, where everyone can
see how *many* games that sound awesome with the GUS.

I tried Megaem with Masters of Orion (MOO). It worked. Music is used

fighters in one shot!

Subject: New 2X Speed Mitsumi w/ GUS
Hey fellow GUSers-
I saw that new Mitsumi Double Speed drive at a local Best Buy for
just under $200. I am not too familiar with the GUS daughterboards,
so clue me in if I'm missing something obvious here...
This drive even has a motorized tray!
I am wondering if this is a good CDROM to use with a GUS (does the
Mitsumi daughterboard connect to this new drive?) I appears
that only a proprietary interface is on the card, so SCSI II is out
of the question. Do I want to be stuck with a proprietary interface?
I have read several CDROM reviews which say to go for the SCSI II interface,
so I'm a little skeptical of this drive, but the price is very reasonable.
Any input from someone who has one of these or other comments welcome!
Hey, does anyone know if only SCSI II will be supported by the GUS MAX?
(ie. are the other CDROM adaptor boards available to connect to the MAX?)

Phat,
I already have the ULTRASND.INI located in the proper directory and
the path assignment is pointing to the correct directory. I'm sure
there is nothing wrong with my setup of ULTRASND.INI because if the path
assignment is pointing to the wrong directory, the Patch Manager will
not even list the patches in its windows. The problem I'm experiencing
is that the Patch Manager will not load any patch and patch caching is
no longer functional. Someone mentioned to me that he had similar
problems when he initially installed the new Windows drivers, but after
many times of fiddling with the driver, he was managed to make the
drivers to work properly. I have no such luck though...

It linearizes the MIDI volume response. The GUS driver originally had
a log volume response in which the perceived volume increased exponentially
with the note velocity. This caused problems with balance in most MIDI
files since most are arranged for a linear volume curve.

My hunch is that one slider is for the digital volume (i.e. the volume that
gets applied to the voices when they are digitally mixed) and the other
is for the analog mixer on the Max and the 16-bit daughtercard to attenuate
the signal from the GF1 after it goes through the DAC. If you don't have
the Max or the 16-bit daughtercard (I don't think many of you would, since
they're not out yet), then you needn't worry yourself about the analog
sliders.
Phat.

Hi all!
Leafing through the latest issue of Sierra's _InterAction_ advert/mag,
I noticed one of those match-your-gamepiece-to-the-one-in-the-store

things) 25 GUSes!
Way to go Gravis/Sierra!

Subject: Targeting Lockups in Xwing with Megaem
I've finally discovered for myself how to get the new Megaem to work well
with Xwing. I have a fairly vanilla 486-33 with 4 Mb RAM and NO other
nonstandard hardware (CD, SCSI, etc.) or software (QEMM, etc.). I am
booting with EMM386 as device=a:\EMM386.EXE 2048 Notice that the file from
the boot disk (a:) is used. Megaem is started, then EMUSET /F22
This gave me great music but I got a terrible pause whenever Locking onto a
new target (only with 'music on' during combat). I noticed that the EMM386
I was using was from Dos 6.0 (not 6.2), so as a test I used the one from
Windows 3.1 (it's dated 3/10/92). The lockup problem has vanished!
IMHO, if you want music during combat the best setup for Xwing is:
1) Use the original Windows 3.1 EMM386.EXE
2) Use /F22 on EMUSET (even if you have a 1 Mb GUS)
3) Edit the ultrasnd.ini file in your \ULTRASND directory and change patch
127 from ringwhsl to pistol2 (pistol2.pat is in GUNS.ZIP at epas [Thanks,
Francois!])
The only remaining annoyance is that high-pitched flute during screen flybys
of xwings and shuttles. Other than that, the addition of Megaem makes the
GUS, THE BEST CHOICE for the penny-wise computerist. I should think that
Megaem might further boost the popularity of games like Xwing. If I was
LucasArts, I would consider sending a bonus check to Jayeson.

Subject: WANTED: Experiences with Adaptec 1542B/C and MegaEm.
Does anyone have any success/horror stories using the latest MegaEm
with an Adaptec 1542B/C? I'm aware that the MT32 addresses conflicted
with Adaptec's and that there IS a special PROM (or code to burn
your own) available which alters the addresses used by the Adaptec.
Has anyone does this? If so, how well does this work? Does this
cause any incompatibilities with Windows, OS/2 v2.x (or is it totally
transparent)?
